ABOUT ME

Artist's Statement

I am an American painter working in an impressionist-representational style.  My works depict everyday scenes and structures with an emphasis on light, line, repetition, and strong angles.  I’m inspired by the works of Edward Hopper, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, and Edgar Degas.

I began my art career as a Graphic Designer, working for a variety of clients, such as Fujifilm, and Johnson & Johnson, and later started my own design company.  While my design business was successful, I found the “business” part taking more and more of my time.  This lack of creativity weighed on me.  When my children were still in grade school, I had an opportunity to teach an after-school art program, and I loved it.  I immediately began the transition to becoming a certified art teacher.  This is also around the time when I began painting more frequently, and studying fine art at the Academy of Art University under William Maughan. I’ve been teaching now for over 15 years, and I truly love sharing and making art with my students.

My goal as an artist is to bring the often unnoticed beauty of the everyday and common to the forefront.  There are so many details in life that we just don't notice.  An unknown art teacher once said, “Good artists look, great artists look longer”.  We need to slow down and look longer.
